NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. An investigation is underway after a camper exploded into flames in a suspicious incident that occurred early Thursday morning at 7619 Bogart Dr. in the Suncoast Estates.

The North Fort Myers Fire District was called to the incident at 6:22 AM on Thursday.

The fire was reported to have "several scene security issues" as the NFD was toned out to the call.

At around 6:25 AM, the Lee Co. Sheriff's Office secured the scene for fire responders.

When NFD units arrived, they noticed that the camper was completely burnt out, and that the fire had spread to a wooded area nearby.

The fire was fully extinguished at 6:47 AM.

Firefighters have deemed the fire suspicious in nature, and the State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident alongside the Lee Co. Sheriff's Office.

A thick column of smoke could be seen in the air as the fire spread into the brush on Thursday morning.

Residents who live near the area told us that the incident started around 2:30 AM when an ex-boyfriend of a woman living inside of the camper began banging on the door and shooting at the camper.

The ex-boyfriend allegedly returned hours later and caused an unknown explosion, igniting the camper into flames.

LCSO hasn't confirmed these accounts or announced if any arrests were made.

Multiple roads were closed in the area in the hours leading after the incident and a local school was locked down as a precaution.

A helicopter was also deployed to aid in a suspect search.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, but SWFLUC can confirm that shots were fired.

The police presence has since reduced, but deputies and investigators are still on the scene.

The LCSO's Fugitive Warrants team is taking part in the investigation.

This is a developing story.
